Our project activities in Koinadugu District, Sierra Leone.

 

Timbo Sakuralla Community Project

BAN donated 45 bags of rice to the community as a contribution to alleviation of hunger in the community and promised to do more in the near future. BAN representatives reaffirmed her organization’s commitment to support the education of the children. The community people expressed their appreciation of the gesture, but they highlighted what they considered their most pressing needs. Get involved

Project challenges
  • Building a school in the community
    (All children trek daily 12km dusty road to and from a school in Kabala which is strenuous and dangerous)
  • Building a clinic in the community
  • Building of other social facilities, such as a community centre etc.

 

Kamanor 11 Primary School Project

School project you can also supportThis community is about 8 km to the north of Kabala and has about 20 dwelling houses with an estimated population of about 150 to 200. This community had a makeshift school which they themselves were gradually establishing. This unfinished building collapsed and nothing came in its place so far.

The school had an enrolment of about 76 pupils from classes one to three, with only one teacher. School children and community people all benefited from used clothes, toys, books and other school materials donated by BAN.

 

Project challenges
  • Building a new school in the community

DEC Primary School Project

This school is also within the township of Kabala. It has three structures/buildings of 8 classrooms.  There is  a lower section or unit comprising classes 1 2 and 3 with an enrolment of 407 pupils and an upper section or unit comprising classes 4, 5 and 6 with an enrolment of 414.  It has a combined teaching force of 16 teachers including two head masters.

The two structures/buildings when completed and handed over will cushion the overcrowding problem. Very limited sitting accommodation for both pupils and teachers. Lack of sufficient learning and school materials.

Although this community is about 30 km from Kabala but it takes 6 hours to get to this village. The roads' quality is very poor which makes traveling to Kabala very dangerous.

BAN’s founder encouraged her younger school going brothers and sisters to put education at the top of their list and promised her organization would do more for anyone serious about his or her education. Organization donated school materials to all the pupils and teachers of the school.

    (Current building is insufficient for the number of students and is not in a good condition - classroom walls are filthy, ceiling is missing)

    (At this moment the number of chairs, desks and learning material is limited)
  • Building of a water well
    (There is no water and toilet facilities are very poor at the moment)

 

Foronaia Community Project

This community is located about 22 km north east of Kabala, it has about 18 dwelling-houses with an estimated population of about 170. There is a community school wanting to affiliate with the MCA mission which is yet to be realized.

The school is a makeshift. It is built with four poles, holding a roof covered with palm fronds and dilapidated plastic sheeting. Both school children and community people benefited from BAN donations

    (Current building is insufficient for the number of students and the makeshift building is not of a good quality)
  • Supplying school material
    (At this moment the number of chairs, desks and learning material is limited)
  • Building of a water well
    (There is no water and toilet facilities are very poor at the moment)

 

Koinadugu Community Project

This community is located north-east from Kabala and inherits the district name (Koinadugu district). It has about 75 dwelling-houses with an estimated population of about 2000 to 2500. This community has a primary school with one building comprising two big classrooms partitioned among other classes. The school is benefiting from the Sababu education project which is erecting two structures/ buildings of three classrooms each, expected to be completed and handed over in May this year.

This community received the largest consignment of used cloths, toys and school materials donated by BAN.

Project Challenges

  • The two structures/buildings when completed and handed over will cushion the overcrowding problem.

  • Very limited sitting accommodation for both pupils and teachers.

  • Lack of sufficient learning and school materials.

  • Although this community is about 30km. from Kabala but it takes 6 hours to get to this village. The roads are death traps and terribly dangerous.

  • No water well.

  • Poor toilet facilities

 

Kabala Secondary School

This is a co-educational Secondary School divided into two sections: The Junior Secondary School (JSS) comprising forms 1, 2 and 3, with an enrolment of 1,128 pupils and the Senior Secondary School comprising forms 4, 5 and 6 with 512 pupils enrolled

It is the oldest and one of the largest schools in the District. The BAN Project leader dubbed the school her alma mater and urged her younger colleagues to make education a top priority.

Pupils, teachers received school material donations from BAN and she promised her organization would do more in the near future.

Project Challenges
  • This is a much improved school compared to previous ones.
  • It has spacious classrooms and sufficient seating accommodations.
  • It has an organized and spacious library room and offices.
  • Its location is ideal for learning but it needs improved recreational facilities.
  • Needs increased learning and education materials.
  • The destroyed Home Economics department is currently under rehabilitation. This Department is yet to find donors to help equip the Department

 

Al-Harrkan Primary School

This school is in Yogamaia (a part of Kabala town). The building is not completed . The are 334 pupils that are enrolled in this institution. Also , the number of teachers is 9 which is not enough  looking at the number of  pupils. All the pupils and teachers received educational materials donated by BANalha

Project Challenges
  • The school is in house building is not conducive for learning
  • There is limited learning and educational material
  • Very limited seating accommodation for pupils and teachers
  • No playground for the pupils
  • No toilet for the school
  • No water well
  • There is overcrowding in the classrooms

 

Browndel Secondary School Computer Training Project

 

This school is situated the eastern part of Freetown and it received eleven(11) computers and other educational materials from BAN.

Project Challenges
The school is academically oriented and has no provision for skills training such as computer literacy. Binta`s Angels Network is therefore working on a pilot project geared towards the provision of computers and other technically skills related training material.
